In June 2025, a grant of £5,000 was awarded by the ELMC to Salford Lads and Girls Club, a long-standing community organisation based in Ordsal, Salford. The funding was designated for the purchase of two interactive media screens—an investment aimed at enriching the educational and social experiences of local young people.

A follow-up visit on 15 April 2026 provided an opportunity to assess the impact of this grant. The results were both tangible and inspiring.

The two interactive screens, equipped with touch and voice-operated technology, have quickly become a central feature of the club’s activities. Designed to be accessible to users of all ages and abilities, the screens allow young people to engage with educational games, creative applications, and internet-based learning tools. These resources encourage not only digital literacy but also creativity, confidence, and self-expression.

To date, more than 150 children and young people have directly benefited from the new equipment. For many, the screens offer a safe and stimulating environment where learning feels enjoyable and inclusive.

One particularly meaningful example is a young girl with Down syndrome who attends the club twice a week. The interactive games have provided her with a unique way to engage and communicate, encouraging verbal interaction in a way that traditional methods had not achieved. Her progress highlights the transformative potential of accessible technology when thoughtfully implemented.

The club’s impact extends beyond its facilities. It continues to foster a strong sense of community and belonging. A notable example is Jaxson, a dedicated youth volunteer who was recently nominated for Young Volunteer of the Year. For him and many others, the club is more than just a place to spend time—it is a second home.

Located in one of Salford’s most deprived areas, the club plays a vital role in offering positive alternatives to young people who might otherwise be drawn into antisocial behaviour. By providing engaging activities and supportive mentorship, it helps guide them towards brighter futures.

The introduction of the interactive screens has further strengthened this mission. They serve not only as educational tools but also as a constructive outlet for energy and curiosity, helping young people develop skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

This project demonstrates how targeted funding, combined with dedicated community work, can make a meaningful difference. The ELMC’s support has enabled Salford Lads and Girls Club to enhance its offering and continue its invaluable work at the heart of the community.
