In 2025, ELMC made a generous donation to 22 Whitefield Scouts “The Cherokees” to support improvements to their Scout Hut, including the installation of new external doors and the creation of an indoor caving experience for the young people attending the unit.
On Thursday 30 April 2026, Ed Beaman, Chairman of City East, made a visit to the building to see the completed work and meet those involved in the project. Present were John Davies and Mathew Davies — father and son members of Shakspere Lodge No. 1009 — who both serve as leaders within the Scout unit, along with fellow leader Mr Ian Walsh.
The unit supports boys and girls aged 11 to 18, with opportunities for young adults up to the age of 25 who may wish to progress into leadership roles. At the time of the visit, around 20 young people were taking part in activities at the Hut.
The newly installed front entrance consists of durable grey composite double doors set within a steel frame. Designed to open fully, they provide practical access for moving larger equipment and trailers in and out of the building. The quality of the installation suggests the doors will serve the unit well for many years to come.
One of the most impressive additions is the new indoor caving experience. Adjacent to the climbing wall, a small entrance at ceiling height leads participants into a dark tunnel system constructed within the roof space. The route twists and turns its way along the length of the building, creating a realistic and exciting caving environment for the Scouts.
To make the project possible, substantial structural work was required, including the installation of RSJs to strengthen the ceiling and the replacement of standard ceiling boards with reinforced boarding capable of supporting participants safely.
The Scout leaders explained that the caving experience has already proved extremely popular. Not only is it enjoyable and challenging, but it also helps build confidence and prepares the young people for future trips to real cave systems in North Yorkshire.
It was clear from the visit that the donation has been put to excellent use, providing long-term benefits and exciting opportunities for the young people of 22 Whitefield Scouts “The Cherokees”.
